At a recent Forum on Hate Crimes, a student complained that faculty often seem unwilling to discuss in class significant events occurring in the community or beyond, such as the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, or the cross burning in Arroyo Grande. Recognizing that some faculty (and staff) might feel uncomfortable taking on such discussions, believing themselves unprepared to handle possible emotional reactions (e.g., a distraught student running from the classroom in tears), Barbara Gilbert in Counseling Services has produced a primer entitled “Worst Fears Facilitation Tips” to help with these situations.
